King Jr. Center for Southern Studies will welcome John Blake, senior writer at CNN.com, for the seventh Laurie Byington Lecture on the Contemporary South on Thursday, Jan. 23. Blake’s lecture The Power of a Hopeless Cause will examine his family’s story captured in the memoir More Than I Imagined: What a Black Man Discovered About the White Mother He Never Knew. The events in the story shaped how reporting on race and mental health has changed in the region and nation in the past 20 years. An exhibit entitled Johnnie Mae Maberry: The Artist and Art Teacher is on display at Arkansas Tech University Norman Hall Art Gallery through Friday, Feb. 21. Norman Hall Art Gallery, located at 203 West Q Street on the ATU campus in Russellville, is open weekdays from 8-5 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. Amid an urgent need for more support personnel in K-12 schools, Augsburg University is piloting a new program to train the next generation of school social workers and school-based therapists. Lots of social work students want to work in education, says Associate Professor Erin Sugrue, who chairs Augsburg’s social work department. But the requirement to complete at least one year-long internship in a school setting creates a structural hurdle for students who can’t afford to spend a year or more in an unpaid position. As a result, many internship placements in public schools go unfilled each year.
