A collegiate distance runner, artist, and social media influencer, Amalia Dorion inspires entire communities. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with an emphasis in painting from Adams State University in the spring of 2024. A graduate of an El Paso, Texas high school and with family ties to eastern universities, her family assumed she would follow in their paths and attend college along the east coast. Wesley Meares, PhD, and Lance Hunter, PhD, are avid sports fans and were intrigued by the U.S. Supreme Court's June 2021 ruling in NCAA v Alston that allowed student-athletes to profit from their Name, Image and Likeness. Awed as a young child by the majesty of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, civil engineer and MIT Morningside Academy for Design (MAD) Fellow Zane Schemmer has retained his fascination with bridges: what they look like, why they work, and how they're designed and built. UNLV first reached R1 classification in 2018. Our research has captured international headlines. Mechanical Engineering Professor H. Jeremy Cho and his research team, through a process called atmospheric water harvesting, are studying ways to capture water vapor from the air to transform it into drinkable water; and our geoscientists identified the first-ever mineral from Earth’s lower mantle. We are also graduating more students with doctoral degrees, and bolstering the number of non-faculty researchers in sciences and health.

Tires are an indispensable part of daily life. Without them, our vehicles would just be a bunch of assembled parts — convenient to sit in, but not effective for getting where you are going.

While their usefulness is undisputed, tires do come with some problems. A 2016 Federal Highway Administration report found 280 million tires are discarded annually in the United States. Globally, this number is much higher — over a billion, according to a report by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.

Three women donning Miller Classic welding helmets huddle over their metal cactus projects. Sparks snap and spit and fly in brilliant showers from the welding shop in Grand Canyon University’s Engineering Building. Then cheers erupt amid a furious flinging of high fives. It isn’t something that often comes from the welding shop.
