Awed as a young child by the majesty of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, civil engineer and MIT Morningside Academy for Design (MAD) Fellow Zane Schemmer has retained his fascination with bridges: what they look like, why they work, and how they're designed and built. He weighed the choice between architecture and engineering when heading off to college, but, motivated by the why and how of structural engineering, selected the latter. Now he incorporates design as an iterative process in the writing of algorithms that perfectly balance the forces involved in discrete portions of a structure

Three women donning Miller Classic welding helmets huddle over their metal cactus projects. Sparks snap and spit and fly in brilliant showers from the welding shop in Grand Canyon University’s Engineering Building. Then cheers erupt amid a furious flinging of high fives. It isn’t something that often comes from the welding shop.

JD Mendez, an associate professor of chemistry at Indiana University Columbus, is no stranger to the transformative power of global experiences. Specializing in chitin — a naturally occurring biopolymer found in the shells of crustaceans, the exoskeletons of insects and the cell walls of fungi — Mendez also focuses on chemical education, particularly the ways 3D printing and gamification can enrich students’ understanding.
Idaho State University is empowering student interns to discover and develop their unique talents through the CliftonStrengths workshops offered on campus. These workshops are designed to help participants identify their top strengths and learn strategies to turn them into professional and personal success.
Trillions of miles away from our planet, nuclear reactions inside exploding stars produce most of the naturally occurring elements in the universe.
Here on Earth, Florida State University physicists at the John D. Fox Superconducting Accelerator Laboratory will replicate those reactions to better understand how they work and produce elements. Their work to investigate the universe’s building blocks is funded by a $9 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF).
