An international collaboration that includes an Oregon State University astrophysicist has identified a phenomenon, likened to the quick-footed movements of an iconic cartoon predator, that proves a 19-year-old theory regarding how solar flares are created.

Understanding solar flares is important for predicting space weather and mitigating how it affects technology and human activities, said Vanessa Polito, a courtesy faculty member in OSU’s College of Science.

Four researchers and professors from Michigan State University have been recognized in the 2024 Highly Cited Researchers list, a ranking organized annually by Clarivate Analytics.

The national list recognizes research scientists from across the globe who have offered expertise and significantly influenced their respective fields of research. The list is created from highly cited papers that rank in the top 1% of citations for field and publication year in Clarivates Web of Science citation index. Of the worlds population of scientists and social scientists, highly cited researchers are one in

Growing up, medical student Eric Smith found doctors a little scary. Medical appointments dominated his schedule. Hoping to relieve his severe allergies—which kept him up all night and tired all day—doctors administered test after test and shot after shot.

A student rushes across the UNLV campus just before lunch with a mail-in ballot in hand, darting past the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art and into the polling site at Lied Library.

The line stretches out the door, but the student patiently waits and does their civic duty by voting. The student was one of 1,068,977 Nevadans — 52.5% of active voters — who have already cast a ballot in today’s presidential election.

UNLV first reached R1 classification in 2018. Our research has captured international headlines. Mechanical Engineering Professor H. Jeremy Cho and his research team, through a process called atmospheric water harvesting, are studying ways to capture water vapor from the air to transform it into drinkable water; and our geoscientists identified the first-ever mineral from Earth’s lower mantle. We are also graduating more students with doctoral degrees, and bolstering the number of non-faculty researchers in sciences and health.

Weber State University continues to expand its green energy production capabilities with the completion of a second solar array covered parking lot on the Ogden campus.

More than 1,000 solar panels were installed on top of the new covered structure over the existing public pay lot. Construction on the lot began in late spring and will finish in mid-December. The pay lot is centrally located near the Student Services Center, Shepherd Union and Val A. Browning Center.
