This week, researchers from the Wildfire Interdisciplinary Research Center (WIRC) at San José State University conducted an unparalleled experiment to study extreme fire behavior and fast-moving fire spread in steep canyons. It is the first time a canyon wildfire study of this magnitude has been undertaken anywhere in the world.

The Distinguished Alumnus Award honors alumni whose exceptional achievements and service have brought honor and distinction to the college. Distinguished Alumnus recipients from each college were also recognized at a universitywide lunch hosted by the NC State Alumni Association during Red and White Week.

The University of Louisville’s 2023-24 academic year kicked off with tremendous momentum as a record number of 3,130 first-year students enrolled in fall 2023, an increase of 6.8 percent from 2022, which had also set a record.

The Distinguished Service Award, a prestigious honor recognizing exemplary commitment and leadership in education, was awarded to Brad Miner, superintendent of the USD 247 school district at Cherokee, and Shawn LaSota, high school English language arts and journalism teacher at USD 101 Erie.

Two Cal Poly biological sciences students this year have been awarded National Science Foundation graduate research fellowships.

Erin Aiello, a graduate student, and Heather Neldner, a senior, will each receive $34,000 for three years within a five-year period in addition to a cost-of-education allowance as part of the fellowships.

The competitive fellowship was awarded nationally to 2,000 students this year. The awardees come from a wide range of scientific disciplines and states.

In late July, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association recommended funding for a new collaborative project aimed at reducing flooding around the Sapelo Island Gullah Geechee community known as Hog Hummock. Like many of Georgia’s barrier islands, Sapelo Island and it’s communities are susceptible to coastal flooding, sea-level rise, and other coastal hazards.
