Tires are an indispensable part of daily life. Without them, our vehicles would just be a bunch of assembled parts — convenient to sit in, but not effective for getting where you are going.

While their usefulness is undisputed, tires do come with some problems. A 2016 Federal Highway Administration report found 280 million tires are discarded annually in the United States. Globally, this number is much higher — over a billion, according to a report by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.

The University of Kansas Center for Undergraduate Research & Fellowships (CURF) is hosting the annual Fall Undergraduate Research Showcase. The online event, featuring 44 presentations, will run from 8 a.m. Dec. 10 through 5 p.m. Dec. 12.

An exhibit entitled Johnnie Mae Maberry: The Artist and Art Teacher is on display at Arkansas Tech University Norman Hall Art Gallery through Friday, Feb. 21. Norman Hall Art Gallery, located at 203 West Q Street on the ATU campus in Russellville, is open weekdays from 8-5 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. The exhibit is comprised of two collections: Teaching Joshua Johnson” and “Beautiful Black and Brown Butterflies.

In late July, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association recommended funding for a new collaborative project aimed at reducing flooding around the Sapelo Island Gullah Geechee community known as Hog Hummock. Like many of Georgia’s barrier islands, Sapelo Island and it’s communities are susceptible to coastal flooding, sea-level rise, and other coastal hazards. Two Cal Poly biological sciences students this year have been awarded National Science Foundation graduate research fellowships.

Erin Aiello, a graduate student, and Heather Neldner, a senior, will each receive $34,000 for three years within a five-year period in addition to a cost-of-education allowance as part of the fellowships.

The competitive fellowship was awarded nationally to 2,000 students this year. The awardees come from a wide range of scientific disciplines and states.

The Al Danos College of Business at Nicholls State University is expanding its MBA program to offer three new concentrations: Data Analytics, Human Resource Management, and Supply Chain Management. Applications for the new concentrations are now open for the spring 2025 semester.
