Awed as a young child by the majesty of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, civil engineer and MIT Morningside Academy for Design (MAD) Fellow Zane Schemmer has retained his fascination with bridges: what they look like, why they work, and how they're designed and built. He weighed the choice between architecture and engineering when heading off to college, but, motivated by the why and how of structural engineering, selected the latter. Now he incorporates design as an iterative process in the writing of algorithms that perfectly balance the forces involved in discrete portions of a structure
Participatory science projects, also known as citizen science, can enable K-12 students to make real contributions to science while learning scientific concepts and engaging in the scientific enterprise. However, Carrier said efforts to include participatory science in schools have presented challenges for educators, such as limited time for science instruction and lack of science curriculum. Virginia State University is proud to announce that Azurest South, also known as the Alumni House, has been designated as one of the country's newest National Historic Landmarks (NHLs). Azurest South was among 19 new NHL designations announced by U.S. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland. An NHL designation is the highest federal recognition of a property's historical, architectural, or archeological significance.
The new turbines have been installed, but are not yet operational. One turbine resides northeast of the baseball stadium and the other is southeast of the Broyhill Center. Neal Winebarger, project manager for the Innovation Campus, said the target date for operation of the new turbines is around April. Winebarger said the turbines will power the Innovation Campus and App State’s main campus.
Each year the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (or IEEE) confers the grade of Fellow to one-tenth of one percent of the organization’s 460,000 members. The grade of Fellow is conferred on IEEE members with extraordinary records of accomplishments in the technical fields. A Utah State University professor since 2012, Regan Zane, is among the newly-elected IEEE Fellows. It is the highest grade of IEEE membership and an important career achievement. He is a member of the IEEE Power Electronics Society and is one of seven members of that group elevated to Fellow.
Yaryna Andrushko, a clinical psychologist in her native Ukraine, was displaced by war in her home country in October 2022. Having never been on a plane before and despite not knowing anyone in town, she moved sight-unseen to State College. Since that time, she has worked as a postdoctoral scholar in the Penn State Edna Bennett Pierce Prevention Research Center (PRC) where she studies resilience.
At it's last general meeting of the year on Wednesday, Dec. 11, the Wayne State University Board of Governors unanimously approved an exciting new academic initiative. The doctorate in integrative neuroscience program – also known as INSPIRE – will launch in fall 2025 and will be located in the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Designed to tackle some of today's most pressing challenges in neuroscience, INSPIRE represents a bold, interdisciplinary approach to education and research, combining expertise from biology, psychology, engineering and other disciplines.
